Sole fell off and I didn’t have another pair with me , so a little glue and...
Lesson: keep an extra pair at work.

What brand are they? I haven’t had an issue like that with shoes in years.

Me neither. These were Cole Haans, which usually hold up fine for me. But on these, the sole was not...well-secured. I got up and just walked off the sole:

Whoa. Cole Haans did that? Not my type of shoe, but when did you get them?

There is no excuse for that In those shoes. Nice fix. If the materials are in otherwise good shape, probably worth a visit to the cobbler.

Goodyear welt to the outsole . It’s a beautiful thing.

I think I got these a couple years ago but forgot about them. Started wearing them and...this happened.
If I had to guess, the glue just “dried out.” There was only glue and the sticky tape you see there holding the sole to the bottom of the shoe.
They sure were comfy while they lasted!

Good point. They were pretty much new, but I’d forgotten them in the back of the closet for a couple of years. Started wearing them and...yeah, that happened.
But if that was the worst thing that happened to me that week, I could count myself lucky!

Ouch! I got some from Uptown for $50. Those things are $150+ at outlets.

Shoulda gone for the riveted shoes instead.

Totally! Believe me, I’ve tried...but the Doc Martens don’t fit me well. Narrow feet or something.

That’s funny. I actually find the Docs a touch on the narrow side. The first week or so of break-in was far more brutal than other boots, but after that they fit great. The steel toes are nice and light, too, compared to my other work boots, too.
My only complaint is the leather over the steel toe isn’t holding up so well without some extra protection, although now they’re selling a few styles with exposed toe caps, so maybe they’ll look okay with the leather shredded... Ha. I don’t think
the CSA-rated ones sold so well so I may be out of luck on wearing D
ocs
in the shop once these wear out. But I’ve still got the plain 1490's
for not-work. And I’m dumb so I just ordered these
too:
Because there are so many contexts I can actually get away with wearing those as a “ responsible” adult...

Hmm...maybe I need to keep my eyes open for a deal, and then give them a try one more time. Just see if breaking them in does the trick. They were always a little pricey when I tried, so I was hesitant to commit when they didn’t seem to fit me.

They’re not cheap, that’s true, but the work boots were a bit cheaper than the Timberlands I’ve been wearing at work. But I hear you on what they cost vs initial fit. The Timberlands don’t have anywhere near the brutal break-in period that the Docs tend to have, and I really was pretty nervous about the Docs after I’d initially dropped the money on them. The sales dude at the Dr Martens store when I picked up the steeltoes recommended pulling the insole out for break-in, which helped the fit somewhat but probably made break-in more brutal. But they definitely fit better with the insole back in after a week of wearing them than they did with the insole in at the store. Break-in with the 1490's seemed a little better than the steeltoes, although I didn’t pull the insole for those, but I suspect the steel toe holds them much more rigid, making break in-take longer. I only remember one week of blisters without the steeltoes.
But it’s definitely true that the docs are a more archaic style and don’t have the same fit as something modern. It's definitely a one-size fits all that molds itself to your feet/your feet to it.

Took your advice, found a good-looking pair on sale at Zappos, and they are on their way. Will give them a good break-in and see how they do.
Thanks!

Hopefully they work out for you!
